Wrath of the Lich King – World of Warcraft strikes again!

Wrath of the Lich King - World of Warcraft strikes again!

It’s nearly time; oh it’s so nearly time! At this point, it’s probably fair to say that the internet hype machine is going into overdrive, churning out World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King morsels like a broken vending machine. We’re not complaining though, because the latest word around the water cooler is that Lich King is going to blow away the pretenders like Age of Conan and Warhammer Online, to once again set WoW as the undeniable king of MMORPG’s for another loot crazy year.

It almost seems that the more secretive Blizzard tries to be, the more eager and demanding of info us WoW fans become. That is no accident though; Blizzard know it, and so do we. So the dance continues, Blizzard released more gameplay nuts and bolts at this year’s ‘Blizz Con’ sending visitors into a frenzy with some key character class and location announcements, but that’s nothing compared to what’s coming in the next few months; because you can be sure Blizzard has saved the best for last.

Of course, the usual collection of locations, quests, items and an increase of the character level cap to 80 are to be expected. These new features were broadly discussed by Blizzard in its first press release way back when it announced WOTLK at last year’s Blizz Con 2007. Since then, however, lots more information has been leaked and officially released, which all adds up to a very exciting expansion pack.

Personally, I’m most excited by the improved graphics engine. WoW will remain a great game formula for as long as it exists, but those graphics are starting to get dated, so I’m excited to see how the Lich King and its predecessors build upon Blizzards new policy of incremental graphics engine updates. In theory, this extends the Lich Kings life infinitely, whereas most MMORPG’s usually begin loosing players to their newer and prettier rivals. World of Warcraft in 2020? You bet!

Making Gold In World of Warcraft

Making Gold In World of Warcraft

Anyone that has ever logged into World of Warcraft has heard of gold spammers. Sometimes, we get communications in the form of a bulk mailer to our personal email accounts or even in-game mails advertising “cheap prices” for gold. First and foremost, try to remember that you are playing a game. One already paid for the boxed game and the $14.99 per month in fees to Blizzard only add to this tally. Why on earth would you PAY to have someone PLAY the game for you? Below, you will find some helpful tips so that you can enjoy your game and send those bulk mail gold offers to your Trash Bin.

  • Pick up a gathering profession. If you are planning on raiding and getting raid gear, you might want to consider getting two gathering professions. The available gathering professions are: herbalism, mining, and skinng. Herbalism and Mining utilize map tracking so that you may see nodes while skinning does not. If you are taking two gathering professions, you would be best off picking up skinning and herbalism or mining. Once you gather these materials, sell them on the auction house to other players who need these materials for professions and reagents.
  • Speaking of the auction house, have you downloaded Auctioneer? This is a free World of Warcraft mod that tracks and archives auction house pricing for your server. Some people utilize this tool to make their income by scanning the auction house for items sold well below market value, purchasing them, and reselling at market value. This tactic involves some investment and can be a bit risky, but it is the easiest way to turn a profit.
  • You know those gray items/junk that drop off mobs? Save them up and sell them to a vendor. These items can quickly add up to some serious cash.
  • Quest! Do dailies and content quests! At level 70, these quests pay 10g or more per and are easy to complete. Plus, the items you collect while questing can be worth a ton of gold!

Tiger Takes the Cake

Tiger Takes the Cake

I jumped at the chance to play Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 with a few friends at the weekend. Trying to find a good game these days is difficult enough, my recent experiences in game shops recently feel alot like a treasure hunt that I most definately don’t win! On top of that, my mates had never been particularly into Golf games, not in the same way I am… but we all had a blast. The session stretched long into the night before we called it a tie, (I won!). I grabbed my own copy first thing on Monday morning and have played it pretty solidly since. For all the flack they receive, EA’s sports games are very rarely bad, but they are almost never as consistently brilliant as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09.

EA ships every copy of the humorously abbreviated TWPGAT series with its own brand of slick menus, chewy sound-tracks and layers of statistical icing, but the last few of Tigers outings have been missing that spark of inspired gameplay which ignited the franchise in its early days. I am very pleased to say, Tigers got it back, and he’s on fire.

Many of EA’s sports franchise titles are better this year. Perhaps it’s the natural cycle of production; the ’next gen'consoles are now firmly embedded in the current generation, so it’s no wonder developers have more time for gameplay polishing rather than bug stomping. I have another theory though, I think –along with the TWPGAT09 development team—that we have one key player at EA to thank for Tigers return to form: Peter Moore.

Yes, the inimitable dystopian dome of Peter Moore, overseer of EA’s sports franchises and all round talented guy has certainly had a hand in the successful baking of this cake. EA’s GamerNet platform is more tightly integrated into the game than ever, allowing the saving of awesome or bizarre shots as clips or even challenges which can be attempted by other players. Players can take a moment out from any normal game to attempt a GamerNet challenge which will be displayed right in their single player world, completing these challenges is an immensely satisfying diversion from grinding through hole after par 5 hole. Moore has always been big on connecting gamers and his talented money making finger prints are all over these excellent new GamerNet treats. The man has been so sucsessful with his investments in commercial property, that her really doesn’t need to work any more – though we are all glad that he does. Let’s hope that Moore is baking plenty more of this high quality produce to sample during 2009.

It’s not all sugary roses and Ryder cup cakes though (…what?) The nature of the sport demands a certain pace if it wishes to stay true to Tigers talent, so of course the game takes time –lots of time. Investment is well rewarded though, with lots of item unlocking and skill 1 up’ing to keep things interesting. In the end, it’s a players’ game, and Tigers one of the biggest players of them all. If you’re looking for a golf title, or even a decent multiplayer session, then you won’t be disappointed with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09
