Heavy Metal
If you like to let off steam when you play your console then Twisted Metal certainly scores higher than Solitaire for out-and-out extreme violence. It has been a long time since the city destroying marathon first came to our attention and the latest version is long overdue.
Twisted Metal is based around a competition, organised by a guy called Calypso, in which much of the landscape is up for destruction as players fight to come out on top.
In the same way as guns are central to any shoot ‘em up, for combat games involving cars, it is all about the assortment of machines at your disposal. You could opt for the bulk of the Darkside rig or the hard-wearing police SUV or, if it is speed you are after, there are plenty of sports cars to choose from. Other classic vehicles such as the ice cream truck Sweet Tooth or the motorbike called Reaper also rejoin the fray. In addition to these, a few new vehicles have appeared: Talon the helicopter with its ability to lift and drop enemies is probably the most notable of these.
The landscape is the other aspect which makes Twisted Metal so much fun. Familiar surroundings like Times Square or LA are mocked up, giving you the opportunity to wreak some serious carnage over recognisable, if renamed landmarks. You can smash your way through a supermarket, cruise through a subway tunnel and if you’re unlucky, end up in someone’s swimming pool in a California suburb.
Twisted Metal is a chaotic game and the level of destruction can be a bit overwhelming at times. However, like Grand Theft Auto, the variety of scenarios and endless possibilities keeps the game fresh. So, if you like to smash something up at the end of a long day, this is worth another look.
